District Center for Integrative Medicine
Description
The District Center for Integrative Medicine (DCIM) is a Washington, DC integrative and functional medicine practice founded in 2016 by Dr. Anjali Dsouza, MD — a triple-board-certified physician specializing in Integrative Medicine, Psychiatry, and Palliative Care. DCIM heals patients through a deeply individualized and holistic approach that goes far beyond what most conventional, managed-care practices offer. The center serves two populations: patients with chronic complaints that persist despite seeing multiple specialists and receiving standard treatments, and those who are fundamentally healthy but want to achieve the highest possible level of wellness. Rather than treating a specific organ or system in isolation, DCIM treats the whole person — drawing on advanced diagnostic testing, root-cause medicine, evidence-based nutrition, lifestyle optimization, and a curated network of complementary providers including acupuncture, Chinese medicine, naturopathic medicine, and psychological care.
About the Physician
Dr. Anjali Dsouza earned her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition (with a Minor in Dance) from the University of Texas at Austin and her MD from Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her Psychiatry Residency at George Washington University Hospital — where she served as Chief Resident — along with Fellowships in Palliative Medicine and Health Policy at GWU. Dr. Dsouza holds board certifications from the American Board of Physician Specialties in Integrative Medicine, the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine, and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner, and has completed additional training through Harvard Medical School (Meditation and Psychotherapy), Bastyr University (naturopathic medicine and acupuncture), and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. She holds Master-level Reiki certification and serves as Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at George Washington University. Her clinical focus includes women's health optimization, PMS, PCOS, perimenopause and menopause, autoimmunity, digestive dysfunction, lifestyle medicine, nutritional medicine, preventive care, and metabolic health. The DCIM team also includes Drs. Alison S. Cooper, Gail Lee, Kavita D. Patel, and Shephali Ranpuria.
Services Offered
- Integrative Consultation & Root Cause Assessment — A comprehensive initial evaluation that goes far deeper than standard managed care — including advanced diagnostic testing and an in-depth investigation of body systems, lifestyle, diet, stress, sleep, emotional health, and prior medical history to identify the underlying drivers of illness.
- Women's Health Optimization — Individualized programs for PMS, PCOS, perimenopause, menopause, thyroid dysfunction, adrenal health, hair loss, and hormonal imbalance — addressing root causes rather than prescribing hormone therapy in isolation.
- Autoimmune Disease Management — A functional approach to autoimmunity (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, lupus, RA, and others) identifying and addressing the infectious, environmental, dietary, and stress triggers that perpetuate immune dysregulation beyond what conventional immunology addresses.
- Digestive Health & SIBO — Comprehensive evaluation and treatment of gut dysfunction, small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), leaky gut, and microbiome imbalance — using advanced stool testing, nutritional medicine, herbal therapies, and targeted prescribing to restore gastrointestinal function.
- Metabolic Health Optimization — Evidence-based strategies to improve blood sugar regulation, reverse insulin resistance, optimize body composition, and reduce long-term cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk through diet, lifestyle, targeted supplementation, and advanced lab monitoring.
- Longevity Medicine & Preventive Care — Proactive, personalized programs designed to extend healthspan by identifying and correcting subclinical imbalances in hormones, metabolism, inflammation, cognition, and cardiovascular risk before they progress to overt disease.
- Nutritional Medicine & Supplementation — Individualized nutrition plans and evidence-based supplementation protocols derived from comprehensive laboratory data — going far beyond generic advice to correct specific deficiencies and support optimal function.
- Mind-Body Medicine — Drawing on Dr. Dsouza's training in Harvard meditation and psychotherapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, yoga, and Reiki, DCIM integrates mind-body practices directly into treatment plans for patients dealing with stress, anxiety, chronic pain, and inflammatory conditions.
